Smartphin is an initiative of Bellwether, a NYC based non-profit whose mission is to connect more deeply to the earth through art. Our ambition is to distribute, worldwide, fins for surfboards that will reliably and accurately record ocean parameters including temperature, salinity, pH, location and wave energy. From the beginning Smartphin has been a collaborative effort between Bellwether, engineers, ocean scientists and surfers. Surfers are intimately connected to the oceans, and so could become a new, credible and compelling group of spokespeople for the environment. A unique innovation, Smartphin will not only serve the worldwide scientific community with valuable ocean data, but will also raise environmental awareness about the oceans in general.
